My nine-year-old daughter had an all day play date Monday. The kids had a great time. As we were packing up to leave after dinner, I noticed something shiny on my daughter’s lip. My eyes quickly flickered to her friend, who also had something glistening on her lower lip. My eyeballs quadrupled in size–OMG! They both look like they have lip piercings! They have silver hoops in their lips.

I stayed calm on the outside, but on the inside, I kind of freaked out…My mind flashed forward and I envisioned my baby with a billion tattoos and multiple piercings everywhere. Is my rule-following-angel going to turn out to be a complete rebel? More

Should Parents Put Their Kids on Diets?

Diets and children are not a good mix. I want my kids to have life-long healthy relationships with food and their bodies. By modeling a healthy lifestyle, we can teach our children to celebrate their bodies, savor food, and be active for life. Dieting, which includes food deprivation, restrictive eating, excessive exercise, and negative body talk, can lead to low self-esteem, negative body image, and serious eating disorders.

I have heard first-hand, from women who dieted as children, who expressed the horrible physical, mental, and social consequences and warped thinking that diets lead to—I even know someone who died from the affects of childhood dieting because it led to her disorder eating, which spiraled out of control. I also know women who have wrecked their metabolism, become obese, become anorexic, suffer from body image issues, or lost teeth from binging that started as “innocent” childhood dieting and food vilification. Have you ever been out and seen someone walking their dog, but in reality their dog it really walking them? This shows a lack of investment on the owner’s part to properly teach their dog the correct way to act on a leash. Dogs aren’t born with the knowledge of obedience that is why it’s so important to invest in them when they are puppies so that when they are bigger animals they aren’t out of control…hmmm…this almost sounds like child raising.

The term ‘parent’ in society today has almost become an oxymoron. More and more we see kids who rule their households. The other night, I was at Cinema Cafe with my family and about five kids came in with two adults….clearly outnumbered….the chaperons were very detached from their kids…one boy, approximately nine years old, was clearly the one in control. Not only of the adults he was with, but also over the other kids with him. He demonstrated bullying behavior and no one said a thing. Question of the Day: Do You Feel Like a “Bad” Mommy?

People get burned out working at jobs sometimes (even jobs they love and are passionate about), so they take a day, weekend, or vacation to refresh, rest, and re-energize. Do you think women who are stay-at-home moms are viewed as “bad mommies” when they need a little vacation from their day-to-day grind?

Do you feel guilty when you take a “break”? How does your significant other fit into the equation?

P.S. This is a picture from a vacation gone bust several years ago. There was a wild-fire and we were literally smoked out of our vacation. My youngest and I ended up sick with severe sinus infections. My first sinus infection of many to come…I needed a vacation after that vacation, but that’s a different topic for another day.

What To Do If You Think Your Child Is ‘Overweight’ ~ Guest Post by Julie Parker

 

I read an article yesterday that was written by a Mum who took her eleven year old daughter to Jenny Craig. The reason given was because her daughter had low self-esteem and she considered her to be overweight. Together with her daughter the Mum gave up ice cream and went for two, five-mile hikes a week. Like most Mums she outlined that all she wanted was her daughter’s happiness, but unfortunately relayed that her daughter suffered with disordered eating for many years post Jenny Craig and that she is aware that now as an adult she hates her body. I did not learn if the daughter lost weight or not.

I read the article a number of times and felt sad that the supposed ‘answer’ to a child’s self-esteem issues was a very expensive weight loss program.  I don’t wish to blame or disrespect the Mum in any way, but reading the article has prompted me to share with all of you some tips and ideas as to more positive ways to support your children who may be experiencing negative body image, low self-esteem and concerns about their body and weight.  I hope you find them useful.

This website is for all you parents out there who want to hear the real ins and outs of being a mom. We will discuss the moments, days, feelings, and experiences that most moms don’t usually share with anyone but their closest friends. Almost every mom I’ve met has said that no one ever told her what it’s really like to be a parent. You hear about how wonderful, fun, and lovey everything is (and that’s true), but people don’t tell you about the craziness, unpredictability, and all-encompassing reality of what it’s like to raise kids. I wish I would’ve known the truth sooner, so that I never would’ve felt like a failure for not being perfect. Thankfully, I don’t feel that way anymore–what is perfect, anyway!?! I am perfectly unperfected and so are you. Let’s help all the mom’s out there feel good about themselves and their children, by being real.

This is a place for EVERYONE to have honest, direct dialogue without judgment. Secrets will be told and almost anything goes. We will cover every topic imaginable–the good, the bad, and the funny. Several of my friends will be on-going contributors, and we hope you will comment often. Let yourself be heard! Dads are welcome too.
